Edinburgh City Council has agreed to settle a large number of equal pay claims and withdraw an appeal to the Supreme Court, reports the BBC.
Around 400 female Edinburgh City Council employees, including care workers and classroom assistants, had lodged equal pay claims in 2005, claiming that they should be paid the equivalent to male workers such as refuse collectors and road workers. They won their tribunal case in 2008, however the Council lodged an appeal against the ruling.
Settlement has now been reached in this case, although a number of similar pay claims against Edinburgh Council, and other councils, are still outstanding.
