Many of the NHS boards across Scotland have outstanding equal pay claims to settle, the cost of which could run into tens of millions of pounds, according to the Scottish Conservatives.
Only 141 cases have been settled in the past four years, with a further 9,978 still unresolved. Only Orkney NHS board has no outstanding claims.
Scottish Conservative local government spokeswoman Margaret Mitchell MSP said:
“For many years it has been evident that equal pay has been an issue that needs to be addressed, yet there are still a massive number of outstanding claims, going back several years.
“Instead of spending millions kicking this into the long grass, NHS boards – with the help of the Scottish Government – should be facing up to these claims.
“There are considerably more outstanding claims than settled ones, and we need to know urgently why this is the case.
“We already known councils face a huge bill for equal pay cases, and it now seems our NHS could be in the same situation, at a time when budgets are extremely tight.”
