A recent poll by YouGov has found that a fifth of British are workers are worried they will be made redundant over the next twelve months.
The research, which was carried out as part of YouGov’s UK Household Economic Activity Tracker, revealed that 19% of employees think the risk of redundancy is ‘somewhat’ or ‘very’ likely.
Around 30% have witnessed colleagues being made redundant, and 20% feel unemployment is one of the major threats facing the country in 2013.
Stephen Harmston, Head of SixthSense at YouGov, said: “That a fifth of people are worried about losing their jobs in the next year shows how fragile the economic situation is.
“The fear of redundancy depresses consumers’ desire to spend on non-essential items which in turn makes it more likely that people will lose their jobs.
“It is especially concerning that a large number of high earners are worried about being let go as when this group battens down the hatches it has a significant impact on the economy.”
