Stronger Penalties for Expoiting Workers

New regulations have increased the fines for employers who pay below the National Minimum Wage and employ illegal workers.

The regulations, which came into force last month, increase the maximum fine for employers paying below the National Minimum Wage from £5,000 to £20,000 and double the maximum penalty for employing illegal workers to £20,000. Primary legislation will soon be introduced that will allow the maximum penalty to be made for each underpaid individual worker. In the most serious cases, employers may also face criminal prosecution.

There are also plans to introduce new regulations to prevent recruitment agencies from recruiting solely from abroad by requiring vacancies to be advertised in English in the UK.
