The app-based company Uber, who operate as a taxi booking service is facing legal action following claims that the company is failing to provide basic rights to its drivers.

Changes are to be made to the rules on zero-hours contracts following a Government Consultation on the issue, meaning that employers will be banned from implementing 'exclusivity clauses' - which prevent employees finding extra work elsewhere.

Recent research conducted by Acas shows that people employed under zero hours contracts feel excluded from the sense of security, fairness and trust that's associated with permanent contracts of employment.

In its response to the Government’s consultation on zero hours employment contracts, the Institute of Directors has highlighted the important flexibility these contracts create, enabling businesses to provide services that would not otherwise be commercially viable.
